I study to understand the processes responsible for precipitation variations over the Eurasian continent over a broad range of time scales from diurnal cycle to climate change. I have worked extensively in diurnal precipitation cycle, low pressure systems and intraseasonal oscillations and the interplay among them around South Asia, helping to improve understanding of these process that provide water resources to billions of people and to contribute S2S prediction. I use in-situ observational data, atmospheric reanalysis and satellite remote sensing data to uncover important processes. I have recently studied the mechanism of nocturnal precipitation in the Meghalaya Plateau and the Himalayas including glacierized area.

Research topics:

Diurnal cycles (DC) in cloud/precipitation systems: building blocks that form the hydrological cycle over land

  • Tibetan Plateau: the elevated heating system
  • The Himalayas including the glacierized area: headwaters of major rivers (HiPRECS)
  • The Meghalaya Plateau: nocturnal precipitation in the heaviest rainfall area in the world
  • The Indochina Peninsula: importance of regional-scale mountain ranges
  • The Maritime Continent: remarkable DC under ISOs

Low pressure systems (LPSs)

  • Monsoon depressions over the Bay of Bengal: Effects of latent heating from the ocean surface and MCSs on the rapid development of the monsoon depressions
  • Mechanism responsible for extreme rainfall event over the Himalayas
  • LPSs over monsoon trough: Effects of LPSs on interannual variation of summer total precipitation and extreme flood events

Intraseasonal oscillations (ISOs)

  • Boreal summer intraseasonal oscillationBSISO: Roles of BSISO in the occurrence frequency of tropical cyclones and monsoon lows/depressions
  • Quasi-biweekly/ submonthly oscillation:
  • Dominant submonthly oscillation in rainfall/convection in the Tibetan Plateau and Bangladesh region
  • Modulation of DC by submonthly-scale ISO
  • Effects of quasi-stationary waves along the Asian jet on the Meiyu/Baiu activities
  • Seasonal variation (SV):
  • Convective activity over the Tibetan Plateau throughout the year

Interannual variation (IAV)

  • Effects of ISOs on the IAV of summer rainfall around Bangladesh region
  • Effects of TDs on the IAV of summer rainfall around the Indochina Peninsula
  • Dominant mode of IAV in precipitation over eastern Siberia
  • Interdecadal variation and long-term trend:
  • Long-term change in the onset of Asian monsoon region
  • Long-term change in hydroclimate in eastern Siberia
  • Interdecadal modulation of the ISOs over South Asia
